Note:We are transitioning our terminology from Internet Plans to Time Policies. You may see both terms used interchangeably while we gradually update our documentation.
If this feature is enabled for your organization account, you can configure additional Quality of Service (QoS) parameters to control end-user bandwidth.
⚠️ Important Architecture Note: > In general, QoS parameters should be configured at the Group Policy level. Setting up QoS at the individual Time Policy (Internet Plan) level is not advised unless you are specifically using PIN codes or paid plans to provision access for your users.
Hardware Limitations and Compatibility
Cloud4Wi uses standard RADIUS attributes to enforce QoS parameters. For this to work, your access network hardware must support these attributes. If bandwidth limits are not being applied correctly, please verify that your device and firmware are compatible.
Supported Devices for Native QoS
If your device is not listed below, it does not natively support standard RADIUS QoS attributes:
Cambium Networks
Chillispot
CoovaChilli
Cradlepoint
Deliberant
IgniteNet
Meraki
MikroTik
Ruckus Wireless (Controller and Standalone)
Supported Devices for Filter-ID Based Policies
For certain hardware, you can manage connection policies within the Cloud4Wi Dashboard by referencing the ID of a policy configured locally on your hardware. Cloud4Wi sends this Filter-ID during authentication, and the device applies the corresponding local rules.
You can use Filter-ID based policies with the following manufacturers:
Aerohive
Aruba
Cisco Meraki
Ruckus SCG
Troubleshooting Tip: If bandwidth limits are not working, ensure that your device is on the lists above, and verify that the access point has been entered with the correct Router type in the dashboard. (See: How to add an access point).
How to Set QoS Parameters
If the feature is enabled for your account, you will find the Advanced parameters link at the bottom of the creation and modification pages for a Time Policy (Internet Plan) or Group Policy.
Clicking this link allows you to configure the following QoS parameters:
Max Download Bandwidth (kbps): Limits the download speed for the end-user to the specified value. Leaving this field empty or setting it to
0means unlimited bandwidth.Max Upload Bandwidth (kbps): Limits the upload speed for the end-user to the specified value. Leaving this field empty or setting it to
0means unlimited bandwidth.Filter Id: Applies a pre-configured local policy from your hardware interface by specifying its exact ID string.
How QoS Changes Take Effect
Changes made to QoS settings are not instantly applied to active end-user sessions. They take effect according to the following rules:
1. Recurrent Policies / Plans
QoS limits for existing end-users will update when their policy/plan automatically renews.
Example: If the renewal frequency is set to "Daily", the new QoS limits will apply at
00:00the following day, relative to the timezone configured for that Location.
2. One-Shot Policies / Plans
QoS limits apply only to policies assigned after the change was saved. If a One-Shot plan was assigned to a user prior to the configuration change, they will continue to experience the old limits.
3. Handling Multiple Active Policies
If an end-user has multiple active policies assigned simultaneously with conflicting QoS limits, the platform handles the conflict as follows:
Download Limit: The platform reviews all assigned policies, compares the Max Download Bandwidth values, and enforces the lowest (most restrictive) value.
Upload Limit: The platform reviews all assigned policies, compares the Max Upload Bandwidth values, and enforces the lowest (most restrictive) value.
